Nearly every village in Ecuador has a market at least once a week, where the locals buy everything from fruit and vegetables to shoes and clothes to hardware.
They are lively and have kept their original charm because they are rarely visited by tourists. If you are interested in ecuadorian country life then you will be fascinated by the colors, smells and the wide variety of tropical fruits.
On the other hand there are handicraft markets, certainly the most famous one being Otavalo. On Saturday this calm village transforms into one immense and colorful marketplace.
Put up for sale are beautiful carpets with traditonal Indian patterns, blankets in the typical bright colors, all kind of clothes and hats, jewlery, wickergoods, stonestatures and many more. If you are looking for souvenirs or just a place to take great photos, this is where to come!
