When the German explorer Alexander von Humbolt traveled through Ecuador in 1806 he called the road that passes from Tulcan in the north to Cuenca in the south "Avenue of Volcanos".
To the left and right side of this route tower the immense snow-capped volcanoes such as the Cayambe (5790m), Cotopaxi (5897m) and Chimborazo (6310m) that are worldfamous with moutaineers.
Ecuador's volcanoes are freestanding and impress by their exceeding height and volcanic shape. The long ascension to the peaks is rewarded by extraordinary views and, in the case of the Cotopaxi (highest active volcano in the world) or Sangay, you get the view of a crater with steaming fumaroles.
At the moment the most active one is the Tungurahua (5016m), that catapults with loud rumbling immense clouds of ash into the air. At night you can watch fervent chunks flying from the crater.
